Cathy's Say

In a nutshell: Well equipped, stylish, comfortable, all bedrooms en suite, short drive to beach, wheelchair access. Scarborough, Britain's first seaside resort, has been welcoming visitors for over 360 years. Once 'the' place to go for a traditional seaside holiday, the old Victorian town of Scarborough still draws the crowds in their droves. Safe sandy beaches are broken by a rocky headland on which stands Scarborough's medieval castle. To get down from the cliff top to the beach, you can take the quaint cliff tramway, which for a modest fee, will transport you down to beach level in style. The sea-front promenade of South Bay is typical of many British seaside towns these days; full of gift shops, amusement arcades and fast food outlets. On the whole though, the North Bay area is much quieter than South Bay, so if you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet away from the crowds, this is the place to be. At the end of North Bay is Peasholm Park with boats for hire on a tranquil lake. The lake is also the venue for the thrice-weekly 'Battle of Peasholm', one of the great eccentric English seaside attractions. The battle is between model warships, mostly manpowered, which has been delighting audiences for more than 80 years!

Property Description

Situated beside the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, yet only 3 miles from Scarborough’s golden beaches, this cluster of five, high quality holiday cottages enjoy views over open meadowland, Scarborough Castle and the sea. Full of charm, character and original features, the cottages are well-equipped, stylish and comfortable – all the bedrooms have en-suite facilities. The rear lawned and enclosed garden, with patio, garden furniture and shared barbecue, has a western aspect ideal for evening relaxation, whilst the front lawned gardens overlook the countryside and sea. Scalby, a lovely rural village with a historic church, café/restaurant, shops and two local inns, is only a fifteen-minute walk from the cottages and, if visitors can bear to leave the comfort and special tranquillity of Barmoor, it is ideally located for walking, cycling or touring the glorious forests, moorland and seascapes which are virtually on the doorstep. Each cottage offers a ‘Drive/walk, good food guide’, compiled by the owners to maximise visitors’ holiday enjoyment. Among Scarborough’s many attractions are a Sea Life Centre and Theatre in the Round (offering productions and films for all ages) as well as plenty of restaurants, cafés and evening entertainment. Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere. The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies half a mile’s walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North York Moors steam railway is a must. A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.
