North Yorkshire holiday cottages like this are a great rural retreat. The Old Granary lies above the Esk Valley amid the beautiful landscape of the North York Moors National Park. There are many historic and beautiful towns and villages in the valley including Castleton, Danby, Glaisdale, Goathland (where the TV series Heartbeat is set), Lealholm, Egton Bridge, Grosmont, Sleights, Ruswarp, Aisalby, Whitby and many more. You can fish for salmon, brown trout and sea trout at various places along the River Esk, and Whitby is also an excellent venue for the sea fisherman. With stunning views the Esk Valley Rail Line is considered one of the most scenic routes in the country. It runs for 36 miles from Whitby to Grosmont where it then connects with the North Yorkshire Railway.

Commanding breathtaking views over the Esk Valley, is this beautiful romantic cottage. Set in 104 acres of pasture and woodland (right photograph) with a ¼ acre wildlife lake, it offers frequent sightings of roe deer, lapwings, curlews and water fowl, and walking in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park from the door. Castleton (1½ miles) boasts shops, village inns and scenic train rides to Whitby's harbour and sandy beaches (15 miles).

When we decided to set up UK Cottages we wanted to offer a website that helps you to research an area of the UK which might be of interest to you, give you an idea of what it has to offer and then present you with a selection of quality-assured self catering holiday cottages from our trusted partners to suit your needs. Peter has worked in senior positions within the travel industry for nearly 30 years.
I was a journalist and latterly a deputy editor of a newspaper until I began to raise my family. We are both keen walkers and have the good fortune to live in the Yorkshire Dales.
