I'm often asked to recommend some Beadnell cottages to rent as it is one of the most popular holiday areas on the Northumbrian coast. Beadnell's main attraction is its magnificent golden beach, one of the longest sandy bays in the north east. It's safe for bathing and excellent for children to build sandcastles and play on the broad dunes. There is a small harbour where fishing boats land lobster, crab and salmon.
Many coastal walks provide breathtaking views along this Heritage Coastline. From Beadnell harbour you can see the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle (pictured above) to the south. The fortress was built on a magnificent scale and rivalled castles of its day, standing on a remote headland. The ruins have an eerie feel and were a favourite subject of the painter Turner.
Just a few miles to the north is Seahouses, a small but bustling harbour. Famous for its fantastic fish and chips and as the launching point for boat trips to the Farne Islands, it has a busy main street and a colourful harbour with spectacular views of the Northumberland coast and, in the distance, the magnificent sight of Bamburgh Castle.
During holiday times Beadnell beach is very popular with watersports including, diving, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, sea canoeing and waterskiing. Cyclists can enjoy a variety of quiet country lanes and bridleways offering spectacular views of the coast and Cheviot Hills in the distance. Birdwatching is extremely popular around the dunes and nearby bird sanctuaries.
