Norfolk offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of busy life and I'm often asked to recommend some North Norfolk cottages to rent for a truly relaxing holiday. The rich history reflected in the towns and villages of North Norfolk offers a wonderful array of places to explore and visit. Around every corner you will find pretty villages with their distinctive brick and flint buildings, miles of unspoilt beaches, delightful countryside and relaxed towns.
King's Lynn is an historic medieval port dating back to the 12th century. Once one of England's most prosperous seaports, the town has narrow streets and handsome merchant houses its old quarter. Down by the river, you can take a ferry over to the west bank and take in the outstanding view of King's Lynn's townscape.
Nearby is Sandringham, the Norfolk country home of the royal family, open to the public during summer months. The house is a friendly and informal place to visit with guides in every room ready to talk to visitors. Sandringham Country Park has way-marked nature trails and numerous paths in the woodlands to explore.
The village of Walsingham is famous as a place of pilgrimage for people of many faiths to this day; in the Middle Ages it was known as the Nazareth of England and ranked alongside Rome and Jerusalem in importance as a place of pilgrimage.
Fakenham is a thriving town with a popular market, racecourse and a great selection of pubs and restaurants. If you enjoy markets then a visit to Fakenham on Thursday is a must. The market square, dominated by the Medieval church of St Peter & St Paul and surrounded by handsome old houses, alongside interesting courtyards and tiny lanes, is home to the weekly market and a farmers' market every fourth Saturday in the month.
North Norfolk is an ideal destination for a seaside holiday. Whether you enjoy the lively atmosphere and entertainment offered by traditional coastal resorts, or the tranquillity of the small fishing villages, you can't help but be impressed by the beautiful coastline. It stretches for over 40 miles most of which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with long sandy beaches, crumbling cliffs, flint pebble banks and salt marshes.
Wells Next The Sea is a traditional fishing port and lovely holiday town on the North Norfolk coast. Despite its name, it is now separated from the sea as a result of silting and lies a mile inland.
Blakeney is a lovely coastal village and one of the most enchanting on the North Norfolk Coast. There are endless views across the estuary and salt marshes out to Blakeney Point, owned by the National Trust.
Sheringham is a traditional seaside town that grew up around its old fishing village. Here you can wander the little streets filled with interesting shops and plenty of places to enjoy excellent food including locally caught crab and lobster, or take a stroll along the cliff tops from where you will get great views down to the beach.
If you are staying at any of our North Norfolk cottages a trip to Cromer is not to be missed. It is a classic Norfolk seaside town. Beautiful landscaped cliff gardens and the promenade overlook fine sandy beaches and the delightful Victorian pier where you can try and catch you own Cromer crab, the delicacy the town is famous for.
