Suffolk, on the east coast, is possibly rural England at its very best and the perfect location for cottage holidays. It has mile after mile of gently undulating countryside with sleepy villages and towns, ideal for exploration on foot or by bike and a coastline dotted with family holiday resorts.
Aldeburgh is a charming, traditional seaside town and the perfect location for enjoyable Suffolk cottage holidays. Its unspoilt nature calls to mind an earlier age. Here the fishermen still draw their boats up onto the shore and sell fish from the beach. However Aldeburgh is also internationally famous for its association with the Festival begun by Benjamin Britten. The newest addition to the Aldeburgh seafront is the Scallop, a Maggi Hambling sculpture dedicated to Benjamin Britten.
Surrounded by peaceful countryside and award-winning beaches bordering on salt marshes, and with large areas of woodland sweeping down to the shore the resort of Southwold is a haven from the demands of modern society. This quintessentially English resort town is almost an island, bounded by the sea, a river and a creek. It boasts a traditional pier and rows of the famous brightly coloured beach huts.
The small, pretty town of Orford was once a thriving sea port, the gradual silting up of the river has left it a quiet village dominated by a 12th century castle and fine medieval church. It is a food-lovers paradise, boasting two fresh fish shops, two smokehouses and an award winning butcher. The village shop and post office still flourishes selling not only food, but essential things such as crabbing lines and fishing nets.
Orford Ness, a 10 mile long shingle spit at the mouth of the Ore, is an internationally important nature reserve, with a fascinating 20th-century military history. In the early 1970s it was the site of a powerful radar station as part of the Cold War defences against low flying attacking aircraft.
